Why children don't tell

  • They may feel ashamed about what has happened to them.
  • They may be afraid no one will believe them.
  • They may have been threatened by the abuser.
  • They may be afraid of being taken away from the family.
  • They may feel the abuse is their fault.

Effects of abuse

  • Ongoing mental health concerns (i.e. anxiety, depression and PTSD)
  • Increased risk of medical/ health concerns and chronic diseases through adulthood
  • Increased risk of substance abuse and engaging in risky behavior
  • Increased risk of teenage pregnancy
  • May increase the likelihood of criminal activity in youth and adulthood

Looking for books to help you talk with your kid?

Sometimes it can be difficult to start conversations with your child, or a child you know, about body safety and sexual abuse. Thankfully, there are many age appropriate books that can be really helpful in this!
Check our recommended books out below:
Books for Caregivers
Books for Children
Books for Adolescents/Teens

How to report abuse

If a child tells you something has happened to them, believe them! Obtain basic information but don't ask detailed questions.

If you have any suspicions that a child is being abused, make a report as soon as possible. Making a report does not mean that you are 100% sure that abuse has occurred, it is simply requesting that professionals complete an investigation to determine the child's safety. You are protected as a good-faith reporter, and reports are confidential.
Information needed:
  • Child's name
  • Child's address/school
  • Your concerns or what the child told you happened
  • Name of the suspected abuser

To File a DFCS report in Georgia: Call 1-855-GACHILD (422-4453)

If you feel that a child is in immediate danger contact local law enforcement or call 911.
